Hi there, this is my first post on the mini forum!

Locally someone is selling a 1974 Mini Pick-up V5 (with historical documents) on its own. They claim that the original car was broken up old/sold for spare parts, however this was not put on the V5.

My question is: Is it possible to legitimately re-shell the car using ALL Heritage parts, and then rebuild the car to the exact original specification, and how would you go about doing so (registering it etc...)? In addition, should the "vehicle" be declared as SORN whilst under going building?

I'm asking as I'm a newbie, and after hours of internet searching this all seems a bit of a grey area. I would only attempt the proposed project if it was 100% legitimate and legal.

Many thanks, zeppelin051.

I would never advise anyone just to buy a v5 on it's own. You're opening up a can of worms

I think it's a non starter as you cannot buy a pickup shell from BMH therefore you cannot legally reshell using the V5. If you were able to get hold of another carpickup then you would need to use that identity.

As far as I can tell the V5 is worthless and should be submitted to the DVLA as scrapped.

My opinion, I'm sure someone else will know more than me.

Good luck and don't get yourself in a difficult situation.

No,

The V5 describes the car, not the other way round. The DVLA have a points system - score enough points for the components that make up the car and you can use the identity - most are for the bodyshell, which can only be replaced with a brand new one from the original manufacturer - BMH in the case of Minis.

How much are they asking for it, out of interest?

Thanks for the responses guys it's much appreciated, I thought it seemed dodgy I just needed it clarifying! They didn't give me a price I was asked to make an offer, to which I said I'd get back to them on... My search for a viable project will therefore continue!

Since the V5 isn't theirs to sell, or proof of ownership, there's nothing stopping you from filling in a V62, paying your £25, and asking for a new V5 for the van. The DVLA would contact the currently registered keeper though, so it could be a waste of your dosh, still be fun to see how they responded.

how did you hear about this v5 for sale? word of mouth? I'd be suspicious instantly if they were trying to sell it down the pub or in the local post office and not on the internet :P Keep searching mate, i found my mini under a tarp for £350 and was in pretty good nick, keep an eye out and you'll find the perfect mini.

On the phone to an eBay trader, I mentioned that I was interested in restoring a pick up and they told me about the V5. Yeah I've been wanting to own/restore a mini for around 10 years now I'm just trying to make the dream a reality!

Its not something I'd risk, imagine chucking a load of cash at this and then have dvla crush it.

I saw that on a well respected 'classic' car site advertised for £250, as a 'historical document'

Be very careful if it's been advertised on the net, especially if the details are viewable. A friend of mine bought a cooper S log book in similar circumstances. Sent it off to swansea and they sent him a nice letter back telling him the car didn't exist anymore. As it had been scrapped in the seventies..........

Building a complete shell from panels without the correct jigs is almost impossible. Buying a second hand shell and swapping identities is now illegal, anyway why would another shell not have ID? As mini owners I don't think its a good idea to make suggestions that could promote the theft of others cars. The only legit way is a heritage shell, but they don't make pick ups. You may also fall foul of the points system because there would be no other original parts.

This is a recipe for pain, either for yourself or some other poor beggar who wakes up to find his pickup gone because of a 'pickup shell wanted' ad.

I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere for a project.
