Driving home tonight I switch on the lights so sides form the main dash switch. The dash lights don't come on, and there appears to be no reflection off the car infront.

I then try other light combinations - spots, no spots, mains, fogs...all produce no light... absolutely sod all.

For both the dash and lights to go 2 fuses would have to blow - I havent checked them as yet, but that would be very unlikely.

A friend suggested the solenoid wires? Apparently locaed on the drivers side inner wind, he told me to check that none of them have come loose.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

nev

this sounds more like a case of a fuse box problem, more than a fuse problem, i had a simular problem with both, mine and Sunshines minis until i changed the fuse boxes.

hope this info helps

cowboys suggestion could be right, or a ground problem. Maybe even the light switch gone awol? Possibly the lighting relay.....

Does the flasher still work, as this is on a different fuse...?

hmm but if it is the switch, why doesnt the flashing work on the light/indicator stalk? You don't need the light switch for that to work...right?

Wht age is your car? Most Mini's have no fuses at all in the headlamps, and those that do have more than two fuses in the lighting system.

I reckon it's the switch as well, they tend to melt a bit. Especially if you have fog and spot lamps too.

The flasher is a seperate circuit as you say but that could just be a fuse problem, does the horn work? That's the same fuse as the headlamp flasher.

Yes i meant the headlamp high beam flasher...err the horn was a little dodgy today but has done a full run through of the river kway today - so its deffinatly working...the hazards gave up days ago - was going to check the relay but never got round to it.

Idicators are working fine and interior light. Wipers are fine, CD player is fine, rear windscreen heater is fine, and interior car heater is fine...engine starts without a problem.

Mini is a 1982 Mayfair/Cooper. 998 engine.

GRRR that bar steward switch! I thought the cable connector behind it was a little loose last time i took it off - but not enough to actually fall off! I will pull it out tomorow and check.

Its not necessarily that the connector has fallen off (although it being loose won't exactly help things). The power for the lights passes through the switch and it's little contacts, and while pulling though power to fill 360W of lamps (if you have spots & fogs too), they tend to get a bit hot and have a tendancy to melt..... inside!

T'was the fusebox! the 2 set of fuse connectors from the top were the culprits - looks like I need to get one at L-B - any suggestions on a good supplier?

are you sure it's not corroded spade connectors or a corroded connector on the fuse box? Can't see how the fusebox would be the culprit when the only thing that can really happen is for the terminal to snap off!?
