If you are referring to Lindsay Porter's mini restoration manual, it is not worth the paper it is printed on. He missed quite a few important points. You will learn far, far more on this forum. I strongly recommend reading right through some of the restoration threads. You will see some very ingenious repairs that are not in the book.

If the engine is out, there is less stress on the shell, so less chance of distortion when you cut bits out. But I would suggest keeping the subframe in, and if you are going to fit a solid subframe mount kit, do it now, rather than later, as it will help to keep the front correctly aligned.

damm that is the manual ive bought, its just something to refer to quickly when im in the garage as the garage isnt near the house so i dont get internet, its also to give me an idea of the panel layout on a mini and what attaches to what as this is the first project of any kind that i have undertaken, i agree with you the help you get on here is fantastic and im sure that once ive got my first panel welded in and i have a solid platform to work from everything else will fall into place.... as my mini seems to be quite rusty, but im determined to get the job done with mistakes on the way no doubt :proud:

If you have a look at the thread links below you will see what you need to do as i have covered most of it apart from the roof and complete rear panel replacement. (Project Erm, Project Paddy and The Red One.)

It is not very good for beginners, but the more experienced people here seem to get very good results with CO2.

I will be sticking to argoshield, about 95% argon, 5% CO2, which I have used since I was an absolute beginner.

As Tiger has said you will better with a argon co2 mix. Try Adams gas.
