Hasn't the MK1 KA got an ancient engine based on something like the Kent engine from the 1950's ? a heavy single cam push-rod engine with not much power, is it fuel-injected?

Depends what year it is, the early ones had the Endura-E engine, which is based on a Ford Kent engine, OHV as well. Was fuel injected though, but not a great system. In 02 (i think) they got the Duratec engine, same capacity, but now OHC and a wee more power, as well as being nicer to drive. They had taller gearing as well from what i remember.
Power figures for both are between 60 and 70bhp. So hardly going to set your world on fire. Not that easy to tune either, so you'll want to think whether it'll be worth the change, a 1275 A series with few mods can easily run more power than that.

Yeah they've got the endura engine, which is the single point injection of the crossflow
You mean multipoint ;)
The Ka has torsion beam rear suspension which is rubbish compared to the mini's independent setup.
and if i remember, there is no rear subframe as such rather two large chassis rails that the suspension mounts to
