It HAS to be tartan........ ;D

Yup defiantly tartan!! Pop down to your local motor factors and ask them for a tin of it, oh and ask them if they've got any "long weights", whilst you're there, they always come in handy!!  :D

....and as it's going to take time and effort, grab a tin of "elbow grease" while you're at it :D

...and you might as well get some "dehydrated water" for topping up the coolant :)

We're getting seriously 'off topic' here guys....... But I think you'll ALL agree, we're offering good, sound advice ;D

Oh... and a GOOD bit of advice while I think about it.... When workng on minis ALWAYS make sure to use an imperial adjustable spanner....

Okay, I'd just like to appologise to the OP for turning this into an "items to send and a trainee/apprentice to get" thread.  :shy:

if you do go down the tartan option don't forget you will need a left handed paint brush for the tricky Lines.

I'm not sure this tartan paint is working. I've followed the instructions carefully as this stuff isn't cheap; from what I can understand, you have to leave it to settle in the can for at least 20mins before application. After doing exactly what it said I fear the bad results could be down to the type of brush I used? Maybe I'm not using the right brush strokes? Help :ohno:

Tartan paint seems like a bit of a faff to me, maybe you could try stripy paint?

I've decided to go for blue or MOWOG green myself.

You're right, red is very common.

Brushing paint on is easier because you don't need to mask anything, just make sure the block is thoroughly cleaned before starting.

I shall just shut the bonnet and never look in the engine bay. Bit of a task with a mini though...
