Hi,

I have just bough my first Mini it is a Austin Mini 1000 city from 1987. The car is already fitted with a catalytic converter, can anyone advise if this is an indication of that the car will run safely on unleaded fuel as I have been told that only unleaded fuel should be used on a car that has a cat.

If I remember correctly, 1987 should run on unleaded. Not sure what that has to do with stage one kits though.

It would be strange for a 998 from 1987 to have a cat. Someone more knowledgeable on late minis may prove me wrong but I thought the cat only came in on the 1275, and I think it was only on the SPi not carb (but could be wrong there). Any pics of it?

I'm fairly sure your '87 998 shouldn't have a CAT. So I would check that.

As above, a 1987 model would not have a CAT a standard, as far as I know the A-Series didn't go over to unleaded until 1988, so a 1987 should be pre-unleaded as standard. As the CAT isn't original, I would imagine that there's a good chance that it doesn't have the original engine either. Even if it does have the original engine though, there's also good chance that the head has been converted to unleaded anyway. Out of interest what is the engine number?

Are you sure it's a catalytic converter? Some minis have a twin box exhaust to keep noise down...

Your information is right . Only ever use unleaded with a cat. The lead compound would poison the catalyst and it would stop working!

He's first got find out if it is a CAT and why one is fitted, like already mentioned 1987 shouldn't have one.
