Id have removed the metal behind the shocker mount Steve, might look okay but i'l be you a hub cap theres a load of rust sandwich between there waiting to get out

Theres a sandwich of two panels there lus the force against the crossmember when hit with a hammer means its tricky to judge, maybe drill a vent hole then ? or even better just peel back the inner skin from under the bonnet right next to the tower bolt you can see it and have a look behind that sandwich panel to see as best you can there.
Either way, keep your eye on it every 5 or 6 months :)

Lightly with a cutting disc, be careful not to go through both plates haha easy does it with this and a nice chisel, wood chisels are one of the very best tool for fabrication weirdly haha ;) (Just don't use your dads best set Doh!

You have no idea how happy i was to see you kept it the original colour!
Most people would have changed the lot, but you gave it a sympathetic restoration. Engine looks great also.
