Watch what happens to a motorcycle chain, power on power off, the sprockets move forward and back out of phase, its a lot more accurate with a tensioner.

i would always use a tensioner personally.
however i have had one fail, the thin metal part (i think its spring steel) ended up stabbing a hole through the side of the cover and causing one huge oil leak! that was on the way back from uttoxeter a few years ago.

if you could get a tensioner for duplex gears I would fir one for sure. the issue is that using the simplex tensioner on a duplex chain, the pad will break up. as stated bmc/bl didn't fit them with their duplex chained engines
in reality I don't think that it makes a whole world of difference in the real world.
its down to preference. though after having a pad wear to basically nothing on one build I have built my engines without since without issues.
