Apologies if this is a repeat post, but the ones I have read don't match my specific problem.

I am attempting to start an engine for the first time, however I cannot get the oil light to go off. I removed the sensor and turned the engine over again on the starter motor, but no oil came out of the hole and the back of the sensor is bone dry.

I have been turning this over and over so it has had plenty of chance to build up pressure. The engine is a standard 1275 from a 1991 Mini Cooper carburettor, bored to 1293cc.

I filled the oil filter prior to fitting it to the engine, and have topped the engine up with 20w50 mineral oil. thee is plenty of compression when turning the engine over, it has fired and ran for a few seconds today but I don't want to push it any further until I can be sure of oil pressure.

Any ideas what I have done wrong?

Sounds like you need to rpime the Oil Pump, remove the oil transfer pipe from the block and pour some oil into the hole in the block. Put the car in second gear (plugs removed) and push it backwards topping up the oil in the hole. Reassemble the pipe and spin the car over with the plugs out until the oil light goes out.

Never, ever fire an engine until you have cranked the engine with plugs out and got a minimum of 40 psi pressure.

Make sure the oil pressure relief valve slides freely.

Back prime as much as is necessary, but don't fire it until the oil pressure is established, unless you want to ruin the new bearings.

It was the oil pressure relief valve - it was missing! Installed this and instant oil pressure. This is what happens when you build an engine then don't attempt to start it for 7 years! All is well, phew.
