Ah, righto. Thanks for that, looks like a compression test it is then.

Got a delivery of tools coming from home tonight so looks like this I'm heading towards doing this myself, which is probably for the better. It's got a 1275 late cooper engine in it, as far as I can tell. Not sure whether its a HIF44 or 38 carb. Will this (http://www.minispare...UG701186HS.aspx) do the job?

Use the BK450 gasket set, and if it is a late Cooper engine in it, chances are it'll be using a HIF44.

So, armed with my new compression tester I have the results:

165

135

50

50

So I'm guessing a split between the two 50psi cylinders?

definite gone between those 2, but your 135 looks on the low side.

maybe valves need adjusting

Right, so I got the head off today but muggins here forgot to drain enough coolant out so it leaked everywhere :( I got what was in the bores out and will be changing the oil a few times before running it in properly, do you guys reckon that'll be enough? Is there anything I else I can do? Everything else looked pretty good :)

Turn the head over and pour petrol into the combustion chambers and look for leakage out the ports, I'd whip the valves out and check for play in the guides and if there ok check the valves and relap as required, fit new stem oil seals while its off. If you dont have one while its all apart get a machine shop to put a straight edge across the face of the head.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice given here. I finished putting everything back together today and took her for a half mile run down to the petrol station and back. I'm pleased to say she made it! I gave her an oil and filter change for good measure too.

When I first started her up there was one pop and a slight burning smell with some whitish smoke coming from around the manifold area, this has now pretty much gone away. I supposed it was possibly WD-40/oil burning?

I torqued the head up in the spiral pattern in two stages, first to 30nm then to just under 60. I will do it again now as she has been out and warmed up a bit. I haven't done the clearances yet as it got dark but will do those tomorrow. Am I right in thinking there is a rule of 9 or something? I remember reading about it on here a while ago.

Thanks again guys! If there's any other advice you have for me at this stage then please let me know :)

remove spark plugs, jack one front wheel up, put in gear..

turn wheel pistons will go up and down, valves will open and close.

you may find with plugs out you can turn the engine with the fan, but otherwise as above jack a wheel up

watch the springs..

Number them in your head 1 to 8 from the radiator side

Now watch for a spring to compress, when it looks fully compressed adjust the valve that adds upto 9

eg If No 5 spring is compressed, adjust No 4 valve.

as long as the spring looks squished it doesn't have to be exact.
