Can You Patch Weld A Subframe?

Best Answer KernowCooper , 02 November 2013 - 11:53 AM

It will be a ongoing job and wont be the end of subframe repairs, its rusting in places where you cant get at, so if its out and your keeping the car I'd put a new one in after painting it well and filling it full of wax/rust preventer.

Hi,

Can you patch weld a subframe or is it illegal or dangerous?

I've included a picture of the top of the subframe where it meets the bodywork above the radius arm. I'd say it about 2 inches square that is rusted. Should I cut out the rust and weld or do I need a new subframe?

What gauge metal would be needed if I can weld it.

You can buy subframe repair panels but if keeping the car I wouldn't bother and just replace it.

you can weld it, cut out the old and make a new peice out of 1.2mm metal.

Like above I would get a new or a good second hand one, I thought it was just the top peice.

I would recommend getting a good second hand one. I picked a galvanised one up for £80, once given a coat of tough paint and WaxOyl it'll never rust.

It's certainly better getting one like that than a new pattern subframe as in my experience most of them aren't particularly good. If you really want new then I would get a genuine one, rather than risk it with a non-gen one.

I wouldn't risk repairing such a critical component. Plus as others have said, it looks like it'll need more work ongoing

Thanks for pointing out the rust in the picture, I'm not sure I would've spotted the problem area without the guiding finger

Depending on your budget really . If your keeping the car and have a few quid get yourself a new or good second hand one . You could weld that patch into it and it would also be fine and will be the option if your skint :)

If thats the only perforation get her welded lol .

Scrapped ones better than that. The rust will be in the web area underneath. Not worth the risk.

It'll cost you more in time (if you can weld) or money (if you need to take it to a shop) than if you just went and bought a decent second hand one.

Really not worth it :-)
