Today is a sad day.

Early this morning on my was to work(as if things couldn't get any worse) I received a nasty shunt to my backside.Attached File  IMAG0298.jpg   69.88K   77 downloads

On a slightly Icey, downhill, two way road an oncoming taxi pulled out from behind a parked vehicle to my side of the road, I slowly stopped to let her through. Next thing I know bang, a Corsa slides into the back of me with a nasty shunt.

Obviously I'm not best pleased.

I'm dealing with insurance company who rekon it'll be a total loss/write off. I want to get it repaired but am worried about getting a lowsy valuation from the insurance engineers who will come to take a look at it.

Any tips, advice or sympathy would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

J

My friend had pretty much exactly the same damage to his mini when he stopped at a red light and a pizza delivery man didnt...
Insurance wrote it off, but you could buy it back and fix it?

That doesn't look that bad at all.has the boot floor moved or creased? Don't let the insurance company take it away, make them come to you. And don't take the first offer they give. it looks like it just needs a new boot, boot hinge panel and some panel beating and a bumper.

Dont accept the 1st off from tpi. Get loads of adverts for cars for sale in similar condition. Dont let anyone take the car away into storage. Let your ins co do what they get paid to do.

Thanks guys.

I've told them their not taking my baby away, so they arranged a garage to take a look at it which I've just done and they're guna get back to me with their costing of the repair work.

I can't get the boot open to have a look at the damage of the boot floor...nor to retrieve my football boots

We repaired a mini with similar damage about a year ago, we charged £600 all in, doesn't look bad at all!

Hi J.

Sorry to read this thread. I really feel for you.

It's probably not too helpful but I bought a mini like this from a friend and got it back on the road. You'll need a boot, boot hinge panel, bumper and possibly a rear valance. The rest should straighten. Doesn't look as if it's so bad at floor level so that should straighten out nicely and should'nt have creased as far as the rear rear subframe mounts (in the boot)

Hopefully your insurance company will see the true value of your mini, It looks like it's in good nick (or at least, what I can see in the photo) so I trust you'll get a sensible payout to have it repaired.

As the others have said, don't let them take it away.

Fingers crossed.

Andy

I'm really sorry to see this :(

Here was Tommy, my Mini, four months ago

However, he is almost finished and I'm hoping to pick him up next week.  It was slightly touch and go with the insurance, but he has been fully repaired and his log book remains clean (I didn't want him to be a Cat C or D).  Palmer Brothers did the work, and although I'm yet to see Tommy, they couldn't have been more helpful.  They told me to tell my insurers that Tommy was going directly to them, they then collected him and dealt with the assessor, so I didn't have to do any of that sort of negotiation.  However, Tommy's bill was fairly huge - around the £5,000 mark, but his damage was extensive :(

I really hope that you too can get your Mini repaired and back on the road.

It really doesnt look too bad as damage to cars go, It will be a relatively cheap fix.

Reminds me of nearly identical damage when my wife drove into the back of her own (nearly new) Cooper Sportpack when moving my Peugeot 405 out of the driveway! Pug needed new front number plate, mini needed new bootlid  >_<

I had a similar shunt 1 month after completely rebuilding my mini to a semi concourse standard. I saw sat in stationary traffic and was hit from behind.

Going through insurance was a nightmare.  The assessor came out and said £1800 to repair and agreed that was fine and knew the car was worth way more than that.

A day later they came back and said my car was only worth £2000 as it had been cat d'ed many years ago even after sending them receipts for over £5000 of mods saying that i could unbolt my mods and put them on another car which was ridiculous (all the mods were declared on insurance).

In the end i got about £1900 and they cat c'ed the car again so i had to take it for a VIC check.

It's now insured under an agreed value policy with a value of £7k so if the worst happens ill hopefully have no problems.

What's with all the minis getting rear ended makes me nervous now :(

If you haven't got a high level LED rear brake light fit one asap in the rear window.....drivers are so used to seeing these now on nearly all cars that under certain conditions the Minis rear brake lights down low get missed by inattentative drivers busy watching their sat navs and smartphones......they were made compulsary on new cars and the very last batch of classic Mini's some years ago because they cut down on rear ending collisions.

Classic MINI High Level Brake Light

mini-led-light_zpsd09dd1c9.jpg

This High Level Brake light fits classic Minis only.

The Brake light contains 33 Hyperbright RED LEDs which emit around the maximum allowed for brake lights.

The LEDs are special wide beam LEDs to emit light over the angle required by the legislation.

Current control uses 11 resistors allowing the unit to work over a wide voltage range - unlike some cheap brake lights.

The moulding is shaped to fit the internal contour of the rear screen. Industrial grade sticky pads are included.

Easily fitted in minutes, instructions and connectors included.

Carefully made by hand in the West Midlands

Low footprint minimises blocking of rear view.

Can be fitted at top or bottom of screen.

LEDs come to full brightness up to 1/5 of a second faster than incandescent bulbs. That is over 11 feet at 75mph !
