Hi All,

 

I was just wondering if it is a common problem for the brake disk shields to sheer off as I have had 3 break in the last year or so.

Not that common, but that might be because people tend not to replace then and do without.

yeah, thin metal rots quickly. i always take mine off anyway to save weight lol. not caused me any problems and id rather that than it fall off and rattle around

If you had 3 break in a year I would suggest returning them to the supplier and demanding replacement. I would expect them to last a minimum of 5 years even on a car parked in a seaside resort

Agree with ^^^^^ but as said above a lot of people just bin them anyway. I have been running minis on discs for more years than I care to remember and have never had any shields fitted, nor have I ever had any problems. The only way you will have problems is MOT time if they are flapping about.

Best place for those shields is in the recycle bin  .

Glad this topic arose. Finally got around to fitting a set of vented discs & 4pots this weekend, went to re-fit the disc shield & of course no way would this now fit, spent a concerned hour deciding whether I'd need to modify them to fit or hunt down some bespoke ones until a friend told me they really weren't required.

what were these designed for? I always thought that is was so the mounting lugs can shear off, then tap and rattle around until you permanently remove them??

think they are supposed to stop brake dust getting on the suspension components and debris getting into the calipers, but yes the main purpose is to make a rattly noise and generally be a pain until you bin them
