I was speaking to an old friend who introduced the idea of fitting a diesel in a Mini, just to be different. He then went on to say that a 1500 bmc diesel would drop "straight in" Looking at the engine, it looks as if someone has bolted a fuel pump/injectors to the good old a series ( look at them on Google, honest!) I have a couple of question though....

1. Would it actually fit

2. Has anyone ever fitted a diesel to a classic mini

I know it would probs be incredibly slow and heavy but it would be nice to have a different from the norm project!!!!

This has come up before. The general consensus seems to be that it is fairly pointless. Not sure if anyone has done that but I have seen a mini with a small daihatsu diesel in that went ok.

The 1.5 Peugeot engine fitted to rover metro diesels will fit with a bit of effort, and it's one of the engine that are hard to kill

the 1500 wont fit, I think the rahter rare 950cc deisel form the nuffeild tractor would fit, but you would need to transplant in a 948 crank to get it to fit the mini box.

I'm not really sure why you'd want to fit a diesel engine in a Mini.

No point really in fitting a diesel engine into a classic Mini although some have.....but this is the modern diesel engined MINI I really like with 2.0 litre S performance, great fuel economy and only £30 annual road tax.

The BMC 1500 Diesel is based on the B-Series block so would be hard to fit for no real gain. It's a heavy old block as well. It's often fitted to boats.

I also can't see why anyone would want to fit a diesel into a wonderful classic car, but each to his own.

I think that many people need to be educated about the joy of diesel my diesel metro would smoke any 'a series' unless it's 150 + hp, fitting a turbo to a diesel engine is child's play

1.4tdi 3cyl VW engine? Can get just over 100hp, crazy fuel econony and would be very fun in a Mini.

Since recently buying a BMW 320D E90 I am converted to the joys of diesel turbo power, torque and amazing fuel economy figures.......however I hate the black gunge while working on the engine (just removed the dreaded swirl flaps from inlet manifold)......also the fact that clean oil goes black on a diesel almost imediately after an oil change!

My Mazda 6 doesn't dirty its oil! 

 

Modern diesels are fantastic, however I don't know why you'd want to fit a BMC diesel lump in a mini for any other reason than to be able to say you've done it!

My 2.2 diesel mazda produces 400nm of it!

Yeah, petrol engines can produce the same torque, but they have to be massive and it's always right on the red line. the only difference is you don't have to rev diesels to make them go (Hence why diesels last so much longer).

 

I love diesels, but it has to be in the right kind of vehicle.
