VW's TDIs are superb. One of those in a mini would be quite a machine, has anybody managed to do that?

Have you seen the size of them though? They are great engines but I can't see how you would get it under a Mini bonnet.
My wifes Ibiza FR only just had enough room for the engine, changing headlight bulbs on one side was much easier if you removed the battery!

Was thinking of the 3 cylinder from the Polo rather than a 4 pot!

still a big lump, same as the 4 cyl but with 1 cyl less.

Perhaps BMW's new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine for the F56 MINI will be compact enough to fit under the bonnet of a classic Mini in the future.........?
Codenamed B38 (petrol) and B37 (diesel), it will come in petrol and diesel forms and is expected to be between five and 15 per cent more economical than BMW’s current N20 four-cylinder engines. Built on an alloy block, the engine gets Valvetronic variable valve timing, a single turbo, 11.0:1 compression ratio. It has been engineered as part of BMW future modular engine strategy, which sees all engines based on the same individual 500cc cylinder.
The B37 diesel engine shares up to 60 per cent of its architecture with the B38 petrol engine and can be made on the same production line. The diesel engine output will range between 100bhp and 181bhp and 166lb ft and 221lb ft of torque.
A balance shaft, that is built in the engine’s crank case evens out the vibrations that you would typically expect in a 3-cylinder.
The first test drive with the F56 3-cylinder New MINI's next week should provide a little confidence to people who are still critical when hearing the word 3-cylinder.

A modern, low maintenance tdi with a high torque / low fuel consumption engine in the classic bodyshell would make for a very desirable mini indeed.

ive actually been thinking about this kind of thing for a while as my boss told me about an engine from some car made in japan or korea, its a 1lt 3 cylinder turbo diesel with 150bhp and its made from aluminium so its small and light. ive been debating getting one of those and doing an engine conversion, need to find out what the engine is from again though and see if i can pick one up cheap.

A modern compact tdi engine in a classic Mini bodyshell which weighs a fraction of most modern small cars should give impressive mpg figures!
Classic Mini - Kerb Weight = 640 kg (1,411 lbs)
BMW MINI - Kerb weight = 1,215 kg. (2,678 lbs )

MPG isnt all about weight, remember the mini has a pretty bad aerodynamic coeficient, 0.48 for a mini, 0.35 for a BINI.

I seem to remember reading something like this in I thing practical classic or some magazine my uncle give me a few years ago, the fella fitted a diesel into a midget and seemed to work fine, a mini would be an interesting concept...
As for diesels, I love 'em, my old astra van has just gone past 245500 miles and still going strong. Love it

Although it's a pretty big part of it!
