The felt bush is OK to use if its recent (not 30 years old nor 10 years old is acceptable) and its been soaked in oil for at least 24 hours.
A plastic bush can be used to replace a felt bush, yes it may be a bit stiff to put into, a screwdriver can help but be careful to not split the bush.
