Cut Out While Driving, Now Won't Start.

Best Answer olly811 , 11 December 2013 - 06:58 PM

Got it started today.

Left the old points in and rebuilt the carb with new gaskets and a hs4 waxstat jet conversion kit (I'm told these are more reliable).

Not sure if it was the general carb clean or the jet that was the issue.

Will go for a test run at the weekend and hopefully wont need too much tweaking. At least I now have lots of spares!

Thanks all.

Happened exactly as you described to my brothers mini.....It was the rotor arm. We just bent it a bit and it's worked fine since!

I've read your initial post and it doesn't mention new points.

I've had a rotor arm go on L2B, I had bad misfiring until it finally died. Caused all kinds of headaches as it looked fine to me. Although mine did not show the same symptoms as yours, I would suggest changing it.

I would put new points in as it doesn't seem like you have replaced these. Also, try a new cap and rotor arm too ( as suggested.

Cheers

Yeah, I thought so also but Haynes says as long as it's whithin 1v of the battery voltage then it's all good.

haynes book of lies... they say to use 10w50 engine oil LOL

new points and condensor( these, even new are rubbish and dont last a week)

new rotor arm and cap,

to check the plugs, remove one, reconnect it to the ht lead, rest it on the head(inbetween rocker cover and a head stud will do) then get someone to crank it over...

then repeat with a knowm good spare plug

hope this helps

So........fitted new cap and rotor. Same issue, not catching at all.

Re-checked the plugs against the block, I am getting spark albeit it does look week (I am used to more modern cars).

Points are also new so that ones hopefully not the issue here.

Is it time to start tearing down the carb? Any tips on cleaning jets etc?

Thanks.

Just pulled off the fuel pipe from the carb and held it into a jam jar, fuel is pumping through well.

Float chamber was only half full, is this normal to accommodate the float itself?

Change the points............. its the only thing not changed. They could be faulty......

Also, do you have the correct coil?

Correct coil fitted. New points going in tomorrow. Current ones look mint but guess you never can tell for sure.

Carb has been stripped too as the gaskets were crumbling.
