Hi,

I'm 17 and Ive past my driving test and i'm looking to insure my mini fully comp. Its a F 1989 Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc. And there lies my problem. There is no such thing! No Austin Mayfair's existed in 1989 they were all rovers, in fact my car was manufactured on the 31st December 1989 so its nearly a 1990 so that makes it even more strange. When i come to get a quote i have to put Rover, as it wont accept anything else. All my documents say Austin, and the current insurance (in my mums name) says its an Austin :s Is there anything legally wrong with this?

Also, surely £1300 can't be the cheapest i can get? My sister used to have a g reg fiesta and only had to pay £800.

Thanks,

Sam

2 things...the main one is that you're sister is a girl and therefore will get a lot cheaper insurance than a boy. £1300 is right for your age, I'm afraid. Try Direct Line and Tesco as they're quite kind to young drivers and you may get it down to £1200, but you'll struggle to get any lower than that

Second, are you sure that's the year of manufacture and not registration?
...could be a very late registered 1988 Austin Mini

According to the RAC cehicle check:

Manufacturer AUSTIN
Model MINI MAYFAIR
Body type 2 DOOR SALOON
Colour RED
Fuel type PETROL
Date manufactured 31 December 1989
Number of previous owners 9
Last owner change 01 June 2004

About right, dam, anyone in the north west want to offer me a job :-

Well it's best to check with the DVLA, as RAC won't know as much as them. DVLA will have, on record, the day your car was manufactured and registered. If it has 31st December 1989 as registration date on your V5c, then it won't have been manufactured on that day, so ask DVLA when it was manufactured

Its basically free, yet £1000 on my mini :S.

Its because my mum is registered disabled and we only have to pay the deposit, £1k, for three years insurance and three years use of the car. every cloud on a silver lining i suppose.

Bungle's got it, the company was called Austin Rover for a few years in the 80's, my '90 was registered as a Rover but the '84 is an Austin. Tell the insurer Austin Rover as that's the proper name.

Oh yeah, and DVLA won't have a clue when your car was built. They only know it exists when it gets registered. They don't issue VINs.

Oh wait it's Heritage, isn't it? Sorry wasn't thinking. Heritage (I think) that will be able to tell you when it was built AND registered (2 sepearte dates)

Just looked at the V5c document which says 21/04/1989 so you must be right.

1989 does seem to be a dodgy year in models etc! as for insurance you could be able to push it down to 900, just shop around! i went to liverpoolvictoria and got a quote for 1300 for a 1.6 escort when i was 18! spendind 20 quid on the phone colud save you hundreds!

Liverpool Victoria quoted me £1301 limited mileage of 2k.

Is buying over the phone usually cheaper?
