Hi there

I have just got my Mini insured and I need to get some standard 10" wheels. I currently have 12" minilites, but if I declare them the insurance premium goes up the roof, so I have came to the conclusion to get some standard ones. My car is a 1983 A reg Miin City E.

What wheels would have been on them as standard?

And how much do you think I would be looking to pay for second hand/new set of wheels?

Thanks for your help

As standard I think you would have had Steelies, anything other than this is a modification and your insurance may increase. However, you may get away with/get less of an increase if Austin gave a showroom option Alloy (most likely MiniLites) which you can get hold of.

Why does it go through the roof??? What insurance company did you try? Give MiniWorld insurance services a ring tell them your with TMF and you will get 15% off their quoted price. I just think its odd that your insurance increases 'through the roof' when you tell them you have bigger wheels. Come on 12"s were standard from 84 on.

I am only 17, but they think it attract thieves so thats why it goes up, it was something like 400 quid increase if I was to declare the 12" Minilites I have at the moment.

What price would I be looking to pay for a set of 10" steels?

As ever your going to have to ring your insurance company to find out. Each company treats modifications differently.

If your driving your mini at the moment with these 12" alloys you HAVE to declare them, theres been a report on here of an insurance company not paying out after an accident because a guys aftermarket wheels weren't declared, it cost him thousands.

I am not currently driving the car yet but have insured the car without any mods, the policy doesetn start till middle of june, so I am going to have to buy a set of steels before I start driving it

Do you know how much it would cost to buy a good set of 10" steels?

They are usually about £5 each with cracked/worn tyres or tenner each with decent tyres. Certainly not £70 unless they have brand spanking tyres

That sounds tempting for £10 each if I could find someone who had them and were going to sell them for that price. I could then sell my Minilites, and if I was to want to have alloys next year, I have a set of Wolfraces in my garage which could be used.

Does anyone have any pictures of those steel wheels?

Oh and would they fill out under normal plastic arches?

Many thanks

I have some 10" 3.5J's kicking around (possibly 5 if you need a spare), and I think they even hold air.. I'll see if the tyres are any good, and if so, you can have them for 10 a bit, I'll even throw in the chrome centres.. the thing that'll cost is the postage..

Hey Guessworks

Ill be really interested in 5. Just let me know the complete price that would be brilliant, even getting the chrome centres would be good also as I would have probably bought them.

How much do you think postage would be?

Thanks again

no one seems to have asked what brakes the car is fitted with !! :proud:

it it's got 12inch wheels now then it must have spacer drums at least. (OK, it may have just spacers or the wheels may have a massive offset).
if it's got front discs then 10 inch wheels wont fit.
at the very least you may have to take off the spacers and change the studs !!!???

go and take a look and see what brakes it's got.
does it have disc brakes on the front ???
are you 100% sure it's fitted with 12's?? (have you got some photos??)

if you have still got drum brakes all round, then why not go for some 10 inch alloys in the future.
they look and handle better than 12's
