Hi just fitting some new track rod ends (the longer ones) to a new steering rack. It has been some years since i have worked on minis but i feel they are not quite right.

Once wound on there is  a bit of play between the inner track rod thread and the thread on the rack.

I haven't fitted the locking nut as I'm worried one of the threads may not be right. Is this normal or do i need to buy some ends  from another supplier to test.

Anyone had the same problem?

Any help much appreciated

I've not had this problem, but I would be very wary of a track-rod end if this was not a close fit on the threaded portion of the steering rack. Will lose strength.

If you are replacing them, how does this compare with the old track-rod ends?

Unfortunately I'm having to build up this car with a lot of new parts as I bought it already stripped so have none to try
I have had another look and they are way to loose even with the track rod end wound fully on you can wobble it
I will get another pair of ends to try
Then I can see if it's the rack or ends
Cheers dan

Right have tested the rack with standard and the longer ends

The standard track rod ends were better but still not perfect.

I also tried my track rod ends on another new rack and they were the same.

The racks were both fam7306 from minispares

Maybe i am being too fussy.

With the locknut tightened the play disappears

Is this normal

Cheers Dan

Try a pair of Triumph Herald/Spitfire/Vitesse/GT6 ends, from any Triumph supplier. They are often cheaper than the Minispares items, and are usually properly made. They were universally used many years ago, before Minispares got in on the act with parts sourced from who knows where....

what you will find with the lock nut loose is slight play in the the threads... have seen this on every car, minis and otherwise.... You will generally find its about 1/2 mm of 'slop' going on until the lock nut is tightened up...
