something along the lines of:

young people + easy to get finance + powerful cars + crashing + death + young people getting a bad name because of the d*ckheads + why doesn't everyone be made to have a Mini for a year + young people not knowing how to drive and what to do when they lose control + all they do is jump on the brakes and reverse at high speed into a tree + other ramblings = Minis84 getting angry!

and......breathe...

Edit - I would like to substantiate my little tirade above, as it does imply that ALL young drivers are included - this is not the case at all, but its certainly young drivers who tend to fall into the category.

You lot need to calm down!!!!!
Get the 998, soooo much fun!!
Also, as far as im concerned, there is no substitute for experience on the road, BUT at the same time, the newer drivers DO have faster reaction times, but i dont want to get involved in that debate!!

this has all got way out of proportion,

YES more young drivers are NOT sensible

YES there are more young than old that are idiots!

there are SOME young drivers who are sensinble

there are SOME old drivers who are unsafe

so DONT asume ALL young are idiots and ALL older people are 100%safe

Back to your topic,

I wouldnt considered being able to get a 998 and then change the engine in a few years as I found that many insurance compaines wont even touch cars that have had engine changes. If your under a certain age ( i think its 19 with adrian flux) then many of the clasic specialist insurance companies wont insure you either.

Just a thought to consider. If you want cheap insurance, get a standard car. Even though the difference between a 998 and a 1275 may only be a different engine the main stream insurance companies dont like modifications in my experience.

My advice would be not to worry about the engine size - what you want to hold out for is a Mini that's rot free (well rot free-ish, or you'll hold out forever, LOL)
Engine can always be swapped later once insurance gets cheaper, but you need a sound shell to put it in.

I brought my 998 mini city back in october 2004 when i was 16. 17000 miles on the clock and in rerli rerli good condition, its been well maintained its whole life. I use my min as a dailey driver.. its 900 quid for inshurance in standard specification (bar a black roof). The amount of cars you can scare with just a 998 is unberliverble!.. ok i cant touch my freinds 1300 mpi.. but who cares? My 998 will give bigger cars a run for there money up to about 50mph, returns 40 mpg around town and has never let me down.
I dont think theres anything up with 998s, there cheaper to buy in most cases unlike 1275s, they hold there value well. if i was you squire, id go buy a well looked after 998 and run it for a few years so you can get your no claims up, then if you still want to go faster a 1275 engine will drop into a 998 mini without too much hastle.
I think youl be suprised just how fast 998s feel and go :proud:

I'll say 1992 onwards is the best bet, that way it should have minimal rust and also have the 1275 as standard and then the insurance is what it is.

Deffo go for less rust than bigger engine but if that means the above; Bonus.

get a 998 but make it a good one. im 17 and i have a 998 and i beat all my mates when we race about like fools admittedly without being big headed i am a better driver but only because my mates are poo. and i cant be that good because i crashed my little baby bout a month ago!. i am just greatful i wasn't in a 1275 or 1380 or i might have done my self some real damage. its fast enough and always remember a mini will out handle pretty much anything. and your car will always have that edge because its a mini and theres nothing cooler than that. x

You're not really helping the "young drivers are responsible and skilled" debate!! Must suck losin ur car, how bad of a crash, was/is it repairable?

I have to agree with the older people on this one, younger drivers are way too big headed just because they past their test, have seen Fast and Furious they think they can race and in general drive like plebs!

Around where i live my dad has had countless boy racers with their saxos try to race him in his M3, And the point is?

Not to say that everyone is like that, but you have to admit most young drivers are!

I would choose which ever Mini your going to be happy with, dont buy the more powerful Mini just so you can show your mates up or whatever....

If you want to 'Drive' go to a track!

Your life is more important than anything else!

Hmm, another thing i have only just realised, 1275 is like a 1.3l engine, that is still a small egnine to start of with, and as has been said, its still gonna be in a really low insurance group, Im only 20, iv have 4 cars (only crashed one, wasnt my fault), 3 of which have be 1.6l, and iv never had to pay over the odds for insurance! So if i was you matey, just get what ever you want, unless its one of the special ones like cooper s, i really dont think insurance will be an issue for you. oohh like garagiste said though, try and get a rot free one!
