Well the battery negative is going to be the best but any clean metal on the body should be good, a seatbelt bolt maybe?

Do the same test at the switch, clean earth to both sides of the switch live terminals if the voltage is low there then try cleaning the spade terminals on the fuse box, in fact top of your list should be to clean and check all the fuse box terminals for any loose or corroded wires etc then smear a bit of vaseline over them before putting them back in the correct order. Most of the electrical faults ive seen on this forum could be solved or avoided just because of the typical grotty fusebox.

Thanks guys, I will try that.

I really do appreciate the advice, being new to Mini ownership and being an amateur at car mechanics isn't a good combination! But its good of you to offer me some advice.

How easy is it to get into the back of the heated screen switch?

In the back of the switch isn't much of a problem.two lugs hold it in.. Then google it and will see what's required..
