Thats exactly what mines like, and mines all ok, it doesn't matter where the drive shaft is, as long as it is timed correctly, but the driveshaft does have to be in roughy the right place otherwise the distributor hits the oil pipe

that's it .. just the same .. don't know now ... feel like giving up ... changed the fuel the same .. checked the timing the same hard to start and runs up and down the revs ... which is pointing to fuel .. cleaned the carbs out checked the fuel settings just the same ..... god knows .. just sounds like is missing and cuts when you add throttle ... full choke just runs with sounds like running on one ... trouble is don't know now if its timing or carbs .... every time I go outside it pisses down ... head in hands wanting to cry ....

Are your spark plugs wet?
Correctly advanced ignition?
Checked for spark at the plugs?
If yes : spray wetstart or startpilot around and/ or directly in the inlet manifold ( if you have a servo brake you can undo a nut and spray it in that way)
taking plugs out and spraying directly in cylinders, then put.plugs back in quick and try to start.works.for me.too sometimes:p

now think I may have found the problem ... ignition is fine ... all cylinders sparking .. but I think I have an air leak on 1 and 2  the plugs are looking wet unlike 3 and 4 which are black and sooty ... taking of the inlet manifold I found one of the nuts loose and the manifold was slightly loose on 1 and 2 .. as I have twin carbs ... getting there slowly .... if this works will be running around Canterbury naked .... shouting I love my Mini ... lol

at last found the problem .... inlet manifold was drawing in air on 1 and 2 ... starting to run on 4 cylinders now .... ordered a new gasket but the rain is lashing down now so going to fix all in a couple of days ... sprayed some wd40 over it and the revs dropped ... at last ...

Glad you're sorted. If I get running problems I always spray wd 40 around the manifold to see if it's a vacuum leak. It usually proves to be the problem and its amazing how even a tiny vacuum compromise can cause issues.
