Just a quickie regarding the lost motion linkage on the SPI.

I have adjusted it so the middle prong it is dead bang in the middle of the two outer.

I wonder when you push on the throttle if this gap should remain the same?

On mine the middle prong moves and pushes on the upper prong.

I am chasing a dodgy idle issue and just want to eliminate this.....

cheers guys

Not sure about the lost motion linkage, would have thought it would only be centralised when idling, sprocketman has done a good piece on spi/mpi running issues. As for dodgy idle have you checked all your vacuum hoses and connectors, the other thing that is a usual cause is the coolant temperature sensor.

Lost motion linkage is set to the tension and position of the throttle cable no more.
It should be in the middle of the two "prongs" as you say with no pressure on the pedal.
This is a basic setting for the throttle cable; idle speed is affected by many things including air leaks.
Check as much as you can on the basics including as noted above the vacuum pipes (they normally split at the rubber elbows), inlet manifold, emissions hoses etc.
Borrow a code reader if you can as diagnosis can be difficult without one.
