Yip you could use any aerosol top coat.. that would do the trick, but to be honest you looking at about a dozen cans at least a fiver a pop, and 1/2 litre of celly top coat should only cost about £15 and 2 litres of celly thinners around £5.
Ask your paint factors if they have any celly lying around that they can sell you cheap..
You will normally find they have 1/2 a litre of this and that lying they may even give you for nothing..
the lighter the colour the better use a thin mix 60 thinners / 40 paint
and give the car a light coat of paint.. this will protect it.. do nto put a tarpollen over it unless it is specifically an out door breathable one, as these will trap moisture
As for rubbing back down, you do not need to take off all the paint, you just need to give it a quick wet flat with p800 wet and dry before applying the actual top coats making sure that after sanding there are no shiny bits left.
