Obviously we all know the Mini is the finest British car ever made, but what about other major car-making countries? What are their best cars of all-time?

I've had a go:

France: Citroen DS

Germany: VW Beetle (911 close second)

Japan: Datsun 240Z

USA: Ford Mustang

British (no.2): E-Type Jag

Feel free to add others :proud:

It is a hard one. I think a Le Mans garage 56 project, the Nissan Deltawing is well up there, it's design is part of the future by using it's unique shape to improve fuel economy and efficiency.

To me the best car has to be a car that enables us to drive like we always have but in a way which is least damaging to the planet we live on.

There are lots of revolutionary designs that are a great example of engineering and design excellence, but the best car has to be one which is futureproofed and will still be here in 100 years.

Italy - Lancia stratos
USA - GT40 (ok I know it was designed at Lola in the Uk but ford are yank owned)
Germany - 944 turbo, under rated car. Faster than a 911 and doesn't try to kill you every half second
Japan - mx5 the car BL should have made after the MGB
Eastern block - trabant, 2 stroke goodness.

Futureproofing is all very well, but surely it's just as good to produce something beautiful, amazing and crazy which will make everyone look in wonder, and then blow up after 5 minutes? ;D

If it has to be future proof then it has to be electric. That would make this the best car in the world ever!

Haha I guess it's opinion. There are lots of awesome cars but when we do eventually run out of fossil fuels they'll all be useless. We've ruined the world enough, in a few years everything will be hybrid or solely electric.

We are here now and take it upon ourselves to decide that the fossil fuels are our to use, that the pollution is ours to create, just because we can, just because big engines and lots of power are awesome, but in 400 years we'll be the generation that people look back on and wonder why we did what we did to the world.

I'm not sure hybrids and electric cars are green. Surely they are just as polluting as petrol, just in different ways and at different stages of the process.

ANYWAY, not the topic for that...

The route of all designs ultimately comes from the earth and it's resources of course, it's contradictory to think that it doesn't since I post this on a PC using electricity, but generally examples of extremely green cars have been engineered. Self sustaining cars is surely the ultimate goal, thats the best car ever when you look at the bigger picture. :-)
