I have recently acquired what I believe it to be early an mk1, built originally by VW Derrington and then later developed by AP Developments during the early 70's, I know little about the engine and car, other than at one point I looked at the 10,000 rpm tacho to find hovering at over 9,000 rpm!

It's running a Webber 40 and has a fairly brutal cam - presumably many more modifications which cannot be identified visually or by ear. It also has straight cut gears.

It has a welded in cage, plexi glass all round, an aluminium roof, doors and a few other alu panels. It has a microcell seat. Has no engine number.

Any one know of AP developments? Any photo archives that might show the car?  Anybody ever see such car compete? It has an ACSMC 1973 contender badge on the side...any info on history greatly appreciated.

would you say its a race or rally car? Could be 70's special saloon spec, but surely it would have lights and not be on mud tires? Surely far too developed for something like autograss...

I'd say the place to ask is over on the MK1 Performance Conversions Forum, lots of knowledge over there, someone may recognise it, the seat looks more like a Restall to me

Nice period competition Mini!

The aluminium pop riveted panels (doors and roof) + BARC stickers suggest 1970's special saloon racing or perhaps a sprint car (Mini 7 did not allow aluminium panels).......however the wheels/tyres look out of place and are probably just a temporary fit from a later era to keep the car mobile. Check the tyre date codes for clues to their age.

Some info on VW Derringtons in link below, who I visited many times as they were local to me in Kingston, Surrey:

Restall Seats brochures:

As said try Mk1 Forum for more.

Thanks for your insight, the front lights appear to have been removed and have plates riveted on covering the holes...what do you think the chances of it being a historic rally cross car are?

I would send Cooperman a PM. If its ex rally then there is a good chance he will know of it.

Possible rallycross car I guess.....what about Minicross which started out as 850cc many years ago and usually remove the lights?

There were lightweight Rallycross Mini's.....watch Keith Ripps fly apart below :ohno:

.....the lack of lights and the aluminium roof panel suggest yours was never a rally car where lights and bodyshell strength is important.....although one of the later works rally Mini's GRX 311D for Paddy Hopkirk in 1969 was a special lightweight car and also de-seamed, see pic below:

A fantastic looking car - nice find!
The wheels look like 10" GBs so they'll probably be late 70's?

I would think Minicross is a strong possibility.

The ACSMC (Association of Central Southern Motor Clubs) is still running various championships. Perhaps someone there will know the car.
