How you describe it, it will only run when the fuel had some time to evaporate orso... How did you set your mixture? too rich can be flooding it( did that myself).Too lean and it wont start either i guess. If too rich: try starting with less choke..
Or the jet is clogged(unlikely though)

The mixture was set with a colour tune before it was left standing (baby came along and ruined my mini time!) but we did wonder whether this was an issue so we tried adjusting it a little at a time and then cranked but not even a cough!

Have tried with choke fully on and off and every stage in between but, again, not even a cough.

The plugs are wet so something's coming through but I don't think it's enough

I eliminated flooding as it starts if I put fuel directly into the bores but happy to be corrected in that if I'm presuming wrongly

Keep trying pal. Don't give up you'll get there soon. I don't know if the vac leak is a red herring, but if the leak is big it definitely won't start. Even a very small leak can prevent it starting. You could always try rubbing some grease around the gaskets to temp seal if you're having trouble with wd 40.

Just a thought but can you hook up with a local club to see if one of the guys can help you out. I'm sure they would. We don't need much of an excuse to get under a mini. I don't know what area you are in ?

The grease is definitely a good idea, would be more confident that I had covered it with then than the wd40, thanks for that.

I'm in Essex and keep meaning to join Essex mini club but have just never got round to it, maybe this is my excuse to do it

Hmmm, I would try screwing the mixture all the way in(lean) then screw it out 3 turns, should be enough to start( if this is the problem) and also moves jet a bit so corosion is broken free etc...

Have done that but happy to try everything twice just in case.

If nothing else works I'm tempted to get a rebuild kit for the carb, even if it just eliminates another possibility

do you have a good spark? clean inside the centre ht lead connection in the ignition coil, it could be that you have a poor spark. it has to be something simple if the petrol is good (new petrol not old stale crappy stuff) and plugs are wet on turning over.

The spark is fine and will fire instantly if I pour petrol directly into the bores, this is why it's getting so frustrating

Do you have a brake servo manifold?

Yes I do, just took the pipe off of the cylinder and there is definate suction there when cranking

Tried using grease for the vac test but no difference, narrowing down to the carb being a problem somewhere

You can try to sea if there is a leak at the brake servo thingy é manifold.. AND you can try to use quickstart spray orso directly there...

Or try something like that instead of the wd40, if it fires you also know its a vacuum leak..
