This is also called the castle nut right?

Would a 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar get it undone?

What torque setting to do it up - can't see it listed in the torque settings FAQ. My torque wrench only goes up to 80nm and I suspect that isn't enough!!!

I got two off last night with a 12inch breaker bar and a long screw driver across the studs so you should be fine.

As nick says re-removal, although I use a piece of angle iron drilled so that it fits over two hub studs and then it wedges the hub against the floor on stops it moving.

The torque settings, presuming you have disc brakes are as follows,

Where there are two split pin bores in the CV joint the hub nut must be torqued to 150 lbtft / 207 Nm, then tightened further to align the hole.
Where there is only one split pin bore the hub nut must be torqued to 193 lbft / 262 Nm, then tightened further to align the hole.

Better with the wheel on and on the ground with a brick under the tyre (front or back depending on size)

I once struggled for a day or two to undo one, even with a 4 foot bar, it undid eventually.

The worse ones are when you buy a complete subframe off someone and they haven't undone the nuts. OK if you have an impact gun. I wedge the wheel under the tow bar of my van to remove. I've snapped studs off trying to stop it turning with screwdrivers and the like.

Thanks all.

In terms of doing it up again, can anyone recommend a torque wrench which is torguey enough? Halfrauds do one which goes up to 300nm but it's £85! Way more than I fancied paying just to do the ball joints etc.

Can't help with torque wrench prices, but. When you undo it leave car on the ground and get an assistant to put the foot brake on. Also to do up to the final torque setting.

To be honest i have never torqued them up to a certain NM just made sure they are nice and tight with a spit pit in them and i haven't had any problems over the past 6 years.

As Nick says as tight as you can with that 24" bar you have, and line up the holes. Also when you refit the drive-flange have the studs 45 degs off from the split pin holes so as not to hamper fitting a split pin.

Please use a torque wrench, I have one you can use anytime. Also don't forget you need to tighten it all up without the taper washer first.
