Is this still a good oil for race use if changed regularly? I want the retro oil because its a retro racecar, but are there far superior oils out there?
From what I've reaserched it's still regarded as a good oil, if used in a high maintenance race engine, and refreshed regularly because of it 'glooping' down to it being castor based

What engine is it being used on? There are of course newer oils, these will deffinatly be more advanced and meaning they will be better for your engine.
My next engine will be running with Redline oil, that or Valvoline which is readily available

i think its good oil, but i am lead to believe it can ONLY be used on a fresh engine build that has had no other oil in it, even for assembly purposes.
it smells SEXY though! when the cradley heathens sppedway used to be by my house the air was thick with the smell of the race engines using this stuff, its fantastic! i have got a really old can of it, when i had my petrol mower i used to put a drop in the petrol tank to get the same smell!

I don't use it, but I believe it is still excellent for an old A-series engine/box.
And, ahhhhh, the smell .

As stated above, you can only use it on a fresh engine build. If mixed with normal oil it goes like thick glue!!
As you are using it on a race car have you considered using a remote oil filter as well as the standard one? This was common practise on miglia racers in the 70's when everybody was using R40.It will help as R40 has no detergent like a modern oil.

Completely off topic but my Dad and me used to use it racing 210cc Villiers engined karts, love that smell, takes me back to 5 years old!

Retro for the win!
Think the new stuffs very similar, the 40 is the grade of oil, same
As the old stuff was.

In the summer I was putting about an egg cup full in the fuel tank, just for the smell on a warm day. Superb!
