So I got the old boy out the garage for the first time this year, anyway last year I fitted a new down pipe .. (Old one had a hole in it) and was never running right since as obviously I had to remove the carb and disconnect the throttle and choke cables ...
My question is does the choke cable need to be fitted completely slack ? But If I do this I can't adjust the idle as the idle screw uses the face of the choke housing to wind in to adjust the idle (if that makes sense) I've tried faffing about 10 times with the choke and thottle cables but can't get the car to run right. Won't idle nice and splutters/pops
Any advice would be appreciated .. :)

Just a though have you got fresh fuel in, as it goes stale more quickly nowadays

It's a good few months old .. Was running ok before the exhaust change.. Possibly the mixture screw needs adjusting too

Idle adjust screw on hs4 is recessed on the top pointing downward. You need the air filter housing off (assuming a standard one) to get to it.
the jet should be in its uppermost position with the choke knob in.
You adjust the height if the jet and therefore the fuel air mixture with the brass nut around the jet near where it enters the carb from underneath.

By the description your trying to adjust the idle speed with the fast idle screw against the choke quadrant see the diagram below
