After reading many posts on here I've come to the conclusion that my check strap seals are missing. I've got some ordered now. Just two questions though.

This will make me sound like a complete amateur (which I am!) but does the clevis pin in the check strap just slide out? I would have thought there would be a split pin on it to hold it in place but mine doesn't seem to have that. Yet the clevis pin is still firmly in place. Is it just a case of using brute force to get it out? (I don't want to pull my check strap off though!)

My other more general question is:

After looking on these forums it seems the check strap seal is a really common thing to be missing. Is this just down to so many previous owners doing repairs themselves and then forgetting to put it back on? Or did many cars leave the factory without them?

They often rot away, or get compressed into pancakes. I have fitted some foam self adhesive ones with a split in them to fit them without removing the arm, they are working well so far.

Yep it's just brute force really, don't have the door all the way open as then the check strap and clevis pin are forced against each other. I would have thought there should be one, mine doesn't and it hasn't come out.

It's probably that ot the seals becoming damaged and can't be bothered to replace them.

I had loads of water in my car, I did the check strap seals, the door seals, drilled fresh drain holes in the bottom of each door (I have two new doors ready for the full resto) and cleaned all the rusty flakes from the inside, I then replaced the plastic sheets behind the door cards. Bone dry both sides now :-)

Would like to get to that stage myself cityepete.

I've put the door plastic in but still leaking a bit so I will have to get that off and try again.

I seem to get some damp down the bulkhead from somewhere as well.

Corners of the screen seal are common for that one, mine are brittle and split yet water tight so they are staying in until the respray. Is your door seal fitted correctly with the join at the bottom and a couple of slots or circular cuts to allow the air and water out? without them the water gathers at the bottom then spills over.

I have the join at the bottom but I cant see any circular holes. How big are they meant to be?

FFS I just typed a long reply and my wife messed about and deleted it all or posted on another forum?!

Lets try again, The holes are either side of the join across the horizontal bit at the bottom of the door opening, the factory ones are usually a semi circle shape cut out like someone has taken a bite out of it, my minispares ones have rectangular ones that are just half inch gaps in the spongy area. If you cant see a small gap through to the door opening when the door is shut any water that has collected will spill over the top and into the cabin rather than just trickling through those slots onto the sill and away onto the ground. :-)

Im just waiting for a picture to upload from my phone to photobucket.......

20140308_183210_zpsfom5ie1f.jpg

I have a slot like this about the same distance from either rounded corner of the door opening, some have a slot where the ends of the seal meet which should be roughly above the central crossmember under your seat, that said factory ones used to have a smaller diameter tube joining the ends together there so I think just the two will do the job.

For me I think it was the door seals, plastic door liners, check strap seals, door drainage holes and the slots as mentioned that came together as a whole to stop the leaking issues, make sure your doors have the drain holes because that was my worst area to begin with as the door was full of water it then came up and over the first hole in the door and leaked from behind the door card onto the seal that had no holes and over the inner sill soaking the carpet on its way to the footwells inside, proper soggy carpets!

My doors, sills and floors are all shot as you can see in the picture but it has MOT until September so I am getting what use out of it I can until then :-)

Thanks CityEPete, I appreciate the detailed reply!

I definitely don't have those slots in the door rubbers on mine. I might have to attack them with a Stanley knife.

I know my drainage holes are clear as I checked them (I was pleasantly surprised when I removed my doorcards the inside of the doors had hardly and rust, so water isn't sitting in there),

I wouldn't have thought your sills look that bad in the picture. A previous owner has stuck sill plates to mine which has me worried its covering up something!

Ok you brainy people, this is probably a really stupid question to ask, but how do I get this big seal:

into the little hole around the check strap? I cant see how it fits!

It just sits against the a post mate, held on with two little plastic push fit pegs, the new one probably needs the holes poking through although you might be able to see where if you hold it up to the light? I went for the stick on ones to save unclipping the arm.
