Do a volt drop test on the cable front to rear and see whats the reading is.

I checked the voltage at the solenoid and it was basically the same as what the battery voltage is.

ypur doing the right thing so far, just need to go furthur with it,

check voltage across all the cables and earths while cranking, ie

battery earth terminal (actually on the terminal) to the body,

engine  to body

starter terminal to body

starter solenoid terninal to starter motor terminal

also do check battery + to - terminals while cranking, some new batterys are actually pretty crap... halfords own brand for example.

I had an on going issue on the other halfs fiat, occasionally it would not start as iff the battery was dead, jump it and it would be fine for a while.... repeat.... turns out it was just a crappy connection between the battery terminal and clamp, looked fine though!

Oh right, it's just that this below is on the Minispares web site for replacement solenoids.

The activation of the starter motor starts with the key (or push button in the early cars), but the most important function is carried out by the solenoid. The current used by the starter motor as it cranks on the engine is very high and the function of the solenoid is to act as a very heavy duty switch. The key or pushbutton is very low current and only sends a voltage to the solenoid that turns on the real voltage to the starter. The solenoid is mounted in the engine compartment and typically either works or doesn't. But we have often seen that the high current part of the solenoid begins to draw too much current internally and thus robs the needed current to the starter. The starter thus doesn't turn fast enough! Cooper S variants had the solenoid in a 12 o clock position and the mini, plus coopers is in the 12.10 position.

Which has got to be the biggest load of old rubbish I have ever read. Where I live, we say "jangan asal omong" or don't talk for the sake of talking.

Halfords batteries are made by Yuasa and are very high quality. Yuasa make a vast number of OE batteries and have a tiny failure rate.
