Be aware that there are two types of tanks, and also two types of petrol cap, vented and non-vented

If your tank has a pipe comming from the top ( inside the boot ) and exiting through the floorpan, then it has a breather pipe. This allows the air to escape when the tank warms in the hot weather.... this type of tank is fitted to the later (MK4 on) models... and a non-vented cap should be used on this tank..

Earlier tanks are sealed units, and require a vented type cap, othewise fuel vapour will be forced out of the cap

Ok, taa everyone! ..

Just going to look at the type of tank i have and then decide which cap i want ..

If that doesn't solve it, i suppose I'll have to lump it .. A sponge and a 2 litre bottle of water in the boot should be alright i suppose ..

:P

Hmm .. Just went to look at the tank and to see if there's a tube going from the tank through the floor ..

And there is .. But, when i look on the flip side of the cap, it says "vented" ..

I'm assuming this could be the cause of my problem ..

Having a breather pipe and a vented cap ..

Either way, I'm going to be buying a non vented cap and a spare gasket .. :P
