54 days from drop off at shipping broker in Brisbane on Nov. 25/13 to taking '73 BL Australia Mini Window Van known as ROO from the docks in Port Metro Vancouver Jan. 17/14.  Another 8 days for British Columbia Safety Certificate, glass & lights approval from government Ministry and I had the Mini Van registered licenced and insured and drove it home.

ROO is now in use for club activities and was driven in the Pat O'Brien Rally to raise funds for the Cardiac Unit at our regional, major hospital.

In June, ROO will be the ride across Canada and south into the USA to the Mid-Ohio Race circuit and the Can-Am Mini Challenge racing...then on to Chicago, Ill. and Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Mini Meet East Meets West...then west across the continent to home!Attached File  ROOcomesHome011714 038a.jpg   65.37K   31 downloadsAttached File  ROOcomesHome011714 040.JPG   57.55K   41 downloadsAttached File  ROOgoesHome01252013 016a.jpg   44.65K   34 downloads

Well we made it...11,300 kilometres/7,053 miles. Started out June 20th to cross Canada to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on to Mid-Ohio track for 55th anniversary classic Mini Challenge racing (49 classics took the starting grid on June 29th), on to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a look, on to Milwaukee Wisconsin for continental Mini Meet East Meets West July 2-6, crossed from Milwaukee to Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana & Idaho before popping up into British Columbia to rejoin our outbound route the Crowsnest Highway.

I have included a photo of the historic Kimes race Mini that was beautifully rebuilt by Andy & Rachel Nelson of Canada and was driven by Nick Swift at Mid-Ohio. Nick's drive was brilliant finishing 2nd only to Joe Huffaker's GT-Lite rear wheel drive Mini and ahead of all the 13" wheeled, tub framed GT-5 Minis.

Few issues...a little lacquer or other debris in the 1 1/4" SU on day one but Mini cleared its throat and off we went. Had rebuilt the suspension with all new rubber cones, knuckles, wiggly pins, adj. lower arms, adj. tie-rods, adding hi-los to rear, new bushes throughout, laser aligned...and new cones collapsed almost immediately...so several stops to readjust ride height. We also lightened the load and sent some gear home with a friend (in a Subaru)from Milwaukee, carried no extra fuel etc.

Extreme rain/wind events in Winnipeg, Manitoba and in Ohio saw Mini flooded out, so mcgyvered solutions to first bag the dizzy, then sleeve the coil & wiring with water bottle. After that Mini was OK in other extreme rain/wind.

In Iowa, the clutch stop jam nut came off and throw-out stop walked in...moments to remove stop nut adjust clutch.

The little 1098 hauled us up the hills...slowly if steeper but steadily like the 5,000 foot ascent of Granite Pass (9,033 ft. elev.) over the Bighorn Mountains (some plus 13,000 feet) in Wyoming.

Two bad loads of fuel in Montana, one at West Yellowstone the other in Troy. Both led to misfires and the Mini died on the climb over the Kootenay Pass with the fuel from Troy. Added choke and we got over the top. Clean fuel in Canada and we ran fine the rest of the way home.

Falken tires (165x60x12") were done on getting home. 2 were new up front from Brisbane to Tasmania return (5,000 miles) and on this trip to South Dakota when they went to the rear. The rear tires had been new in Adelaide and were used up front until getting to Brisbane at the end of the 'One Lap'. They went to the back and stayed there until South Dakota...12-14,000 miles maximum for the 4 tires. I'm sure losing the benefits of the laser alignment did not help...but tire wear was extreme. Had 2 slicks on the back on getting home.

Have new set of Yokie A539s and am refinishing the mags before installing them.

SORRY...not alert to your presence when we hit Thunder Bay...to find that Hwy. 17 (Canada #1) was closed because of washout related damage fears at Jackfish Creek Bridge.  We holed up in Nipigon and lit out early the next morning for the northern route, dropping back down at White River, Ontario before going on to Sault Ste. Marie and across the border into Michigan.

We did stop in White River to readjust the rear ride height...again.

North America has a great many wide open spaces, not least on the Great Plains...and it provides many miles of open road.

I will post a few more photos when I can get back on my other computer with all the files.

We got drowned out in Winnipeg, Manitoba during an extreme wind/rain event. This led to our first "macgyvered" solution, bagging up the distributor.

When we were drowned out on Interstate 71 in Ohio during another extreme rain/wind event, this led to the second "macgyvered" solution using a sectioned water bottle to sleeve the coil and related wiring.

Another extreme wind/rain event (with violent thunder & lightning) hit while we were inside the Indianapolis Speedway Museum...ROO waited patiently outside.

Later in the day as we approached Rockford in Illinois, another extreme rain/wind event saw us hide under a highway overpass...though ROO was ticking over just fine. It was the big side loads from the high winds and lack of grip on a water covered highway that caused us to stop.

Loving this road trip, bloody good effort with only minor issues to contend with.

When we headed west from Milwaukee (Great Lakes region) we got onto the open plains and rolled west without issue...well one. We stopped in Iowa for fuel and while looking for a service station, I lost the ability to change gears. So, shut off the motor at the red light, start the Mini in 1st...and after rolling into a service station and filling up, I rolled away from the pumps...jam nut on the clutch throw out stop had disappeared and the throw out nut had walked in. So, remove stop nut to parts bin, quick check on the clutch and carry on.

We enjoyed the crossing of the Mississippi into Iowa because we could drop in and see the Ghosts at Dyersville where Kevin Kostner's 'The Field of Dreams' was filmed. That's me with the Ghosts (who come out to play on Sundays in the summertime).

After overnighting in Fort Dodge and visiting the recreated fort the next morning, it was off to the Missouri River and the overnight in Yankton. Here we took an after dinner stroll over the 1924 bridge to Nebraska.

Next day we drove across South Dakota to Hot Springs to see the Mammoth site, swap tires front to rear and then head north to see the Crazy Horse monument (face is 90 feet tall), Mount Rushmore and on to Deadwood (where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back in 1876 with a poker hand of Aces & Eights).

Then it was off from Spearfish to Belle Forche to Patty's Place for Breakfast and on to Bear Lodge (aka Devils Tower featured in the movie 'Close Encounters').

We ended up in Cody, Wyoming after a 5,000 foot climb over Granite Pass (9,033 feet) to cross the Bighorn Mountains. The little 1098 got us up and over with a brief fuel boil/vapor lock when we stopped to look back over the Great Plains.

Last photo, we are in the higher elevation Bighorn Basin between the Bighorn Mountains on the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west...ye, that's them away off in the distance.
