Was about to buy a clarke, hydraulic engine lift but I am concerned if it will fit between the wheels

yes it will fit, only you may have to jack the car up, if its to low to get it under the car

Is a recipe for disaster unless you are sure a rafter of a garage can support a weight in excess of 150kg.
I personally wouldn't trust it.

Got a manual engine lift thing myself, on rollers on the beam in my garage and it works just fine - my beam is rated at something insane like 3 tonnes though so there's that...

I personally wouldn't trust it.
If your rafters aren't able to handle 150 odd KG then I'd be a bit worried.
