Hi, some reason when I put the mini in reverse it kind of clunks and doesn't feel smooth like the other gears. Just wondered why?

Cheers

The reverse gear on Minis have no synchro, so thats why sometimes it will not go in, and tou have to let the car roll (only when engine stationary) and why it will not go in when the car is moving, nothing to worry about unless it's clunking when in reverse ((driving)reversing)

It always goes in first time, just makes a little clunk. Doesn't sound good. Forgot to check the engine stab bushes before I went out but will check them tomorrow.

Might be silly question... Why would it be rear brakes?

I think it's gradually been getting worse because it shakes the car tiny bit. Can't really remember though

It seems common for Minis to click/clunk when going backwards, mine does it when pushing backwards and probably when I'm reversing, just drowned out. If all is well in the rear brake and bearing area then don't worry about it, all I can think of is that because the car goes forwards normally the shoes have settled as far forwards as possible and when going back they are being pulled back and then springing back to their rest position?

Definitely not brakes then. Don't know how to explain it. Basically when I engage reverse it clunks. Fleshly bleed clutch, but not made a difference. Probably is the stabiliser bushes because it's like the engine jolts when engaging reverse.

Mine used to do this

But then again I always had some engine movement with normal driving
Reverse gear must be really strong haha

I hadn't used my mini for ages and I put it in reverse for the first time in months the other day
It made a very loud bang and I thought I broke it
After that it was okay...back to a slight clunk and jolt

Isn't this common on most cars?

Pretty much all mine have clunked at times when going into reverse. Even once when I had a nearly new car.

I always thought it was just the fact reverse doesn't have a syncro?

Don't remember it doing it in any of my other minis or cars. It's not violent when engaging, but it's not normal either. Put it that way lol

If theres no noises whilst driving don't worry about it, it's just the design of the engagement

Nope, no noise when driving or any other gears. Alright cheers. I'll still check the stabiliser bushes and most probably replace just so I know I've done them.

Does it clunk as you put it into reverse gear or when driving backwards? If it's when droning backwards, is it going straight back or when turning.

A regular clunking on a tight turn in reverse is one of the signs of a CV joint failing!
