I think if you get the Coupe they might, but for the saloon they don't?

There are a few decent cars I like the look of, and I had an old E36 BMW for a short time that drove beautifully. However, I just tend to buy cars under £1000. I have been lucky so far and had no major repairs but the cars are cheap enough that it doesn't really matter too much. For me, anywhere between 5 and 10k is the middle ground that I don't want to spend.

I think a MINI or a VW Van are the only two I would actually spend around 5k on. Are you any closer to deciding yet?

A lot of people buy at 130k as long as it's got FSH. If it looks rough then walk away.

The 3 series BMW I found cramped. My two lift share work mates both had 330ds. Nice car, went well but felt tiny inside. Both of them had over 170k on the clock. The only thing with them was come winter time and snow was stay at home.

Soda will do but remember they share the same platform as VW and engines as well. So any issues the VW has they will as well. DMF is one of them, when they go it's not a cheap fix. As my son can tell you now..

Just gone on Autotrader and within 100 miles of where I live and a price range of between 4k to 5k there are 117 VW Passat diesels and a lot of them have got around 80k on the clock. Some more some less.

Deffo HPI check what ever you're going to buy and also get the document reference number from the v5 and go and check the MoT history to see the mileage

I think I'm going to go with a bora with the 1.9 tdi engine. Would you buy one at 174,000 miles with service history and well maintained?
My issue is I need to buy from a garage as I'm buying using credit card if also fancy the highline range

Well, bought this http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1423.l2648

Had to take it back today under warranty due to o/s rear brake binding, cv joint making a noise and a slight oil leak. Not a great start but its lovely to drive. Great recommendations on the engine people!

Excited to get it back.

In a strange turn of event the courtesy car I have while the Passat is being fixed is my old car. Feels a bit weird!

Nice car. Just make sure the correct oil is used for the engine. Also keep a eye out for debris blocking the drain under the battery tray. Yours is a later model like mine was so it will have been modified but worth keeping an eye on it. If it blocks it will cause serious damage to the servo.

If it starts to use coolant dont panic as it could well be the botton right radiator pipe connector. These are known to crack and leak which will need a new rad.

Also got some trade in for my Audi coupe so paid £2300 in the end plus a credit card charge but gives me 0% finance for 18 months for £40. The difference in mpg from the Audi to the VW should mean I'm paying way less than £100 a month to get it paid off. Fingers crossed.
