Hi guys,

My Mini's had an odd problem for about 2 years now which I started to notice after the 'new' engine was put in. The problem doesn't affect the drive ability of the car in any way, its just quite annoying because I can't find the cause of the fault at all.

The problem is when starting the car, the engine seem to hiccup and sort of stop turning over for a split second. It doesn't do it all the time though. I'm just stumped as to what is causing it, I know its nothing to do with the carb or timing, and I'm fairly certain its nothing to do with the Ignition system (Electronic) as the car drives like a dream. An educated guess as to what is causing the hiccup is the cable running directly from the battery to starter motor. I swapped the starter motor over for another this morning as I previously thought it was the starter itself but it still does the hiccup. I checked the direct cable from battery to starter a while ago for nicks in the insulation but couldn't find any so I'm now thinking it could be a break inside the cable somewhere.

I've got a video illustrating the problem, you can hear it sort of hiccup when starting, started it a few times and luckily it did it on almost every time apart from the last time showing it doesn't do it all the time. I'm just not completely sure what it is so wanted to ask other peoples opinions before i forked out for a new battery to starter motor cable from minispares.

heres the video... P.S I know its upside down I can't flip it, its the sound you need to concentrate on anyway

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, James

That sounds like exactly the problem I had after fitting an electronic dizzy from Simon bbc on ebay. FAR too much advance on starting but ran just fine. I couldn't be bothered with contacting him or going for a refund etc so just swapped my points system into the shiny new dizzy body. Works just fine now.

The advance is at 8°-10° which I believe to be correct with my stage 1 kit and it runs just fine which is why I believe the problem to be with the cable running direct from the battery to the starter not the ignition system.

Sounds to far advanced, have you checked the advance weights and mechanism is not tight? and you have put a couple of drips of oil under the felt pad so it lubricates the shaft.

I don't understand how the timing would stop the engine turning for a split second unless I'm being a bit dim. I can take the dizzy off and have a look at it to see if anything is amiss though. :)
