I asked him about rescuing a MK1 which has stood outside for however many years and needs fully restoring - he wanted £4,000 to £5,000 for it. Must be something funny in the air down in Hampshire?

It's funny aint it.
I think it's just people hear than Mini's are fetching more money than they did 10 years ago and think they will get top money for an old hack that needs complete restoration.
10 years ago i used to have people knocking my door offering to sell me their mini's and i used to snap them up for pennies.
I bought an 82 City that was basically sound but needed a respray and a pair of A panels for £25, an 83 city for £40 that needed new brakes, a 79 clubman that needed quite alot of welding but only cost me £50 as well as many others in the same sorts of conditions.
You can't do that now, but just because an old mini needing a restoration will be worth more than £50 doesn't mean its worth thousands.
My favourite one was an 89 City E which was so clean you could have eaten your dinner off of it and totally original too. I paid £200 with no MOT took it down for one which it passed first time and sold it for £850 and i thought that was alot of money for a Mini but you wouldn't find one now so clean for less than £2000.
I just think that this guy who is hanging onto all these Mini's is just a bit of a hoarder and doesn't seem to realise that alot of the Mini's he has will just rot in that yard and be worth next to nothing. or perhaps he does... who knows

They were very handy for when I was doing my two minis if a little expensive but that's Winchester for you! But always quality parts, often I would look on eBay for parts and the cheapest would be these guys.
He is a very knowledgable and friendly guy, they also run a car transportation service, they have a mini friendly mot station they use too

i dont begrudge someone holding on on to a mini so they will eventually do it up. but when they come to sell i dont want to pay 2-3k for a car worth 2 to 5 hundred and by that i mean you can atleast get it going now 2 to 5 hundred means no engine or gearbox and a hell of alot of welding and its not as if the car is rare because they were made untill 2000 but its big hoarders like the guy mentioned in this thread that jack up the price of a standard mini and now the private seller is following suit i dont like it the price of a mini is too damn high

Unfortunately his dad had passed away and his mum didn't want it sat there in the way so I bought it, for £150 and trailered it away.
I think this was when I was 19, so nearly 5 years ago now. It's still sat doing nothing now, it's a 1992 sprite 1275 auto and needs quite a lot of body work.
I know I could sell it on for a lot more than £150 but as has been said here, it's my car now and I will rebuild it, just when time, money and space allows. It will be built to a similar spec that him and his dad originally intended. I would hope people don't see that mini sat on my grandmas driveway under a sheet and think "what a waste of a car" or "someone could restore that" without first thinking about their own circumstance and choices.
Although at the same time I realise that they are running a business and probably got a lot more sat there than they can quickly restore. But it can be harder for some people to let go of what they've got than others.
as someone diagnosed with and treated for ocd I realise that sentimental value can take hold of objects that other people would seem as worthless, or even more worth to sell on than to keep sitting there. Maybe we could sympathise with this person we don't personally know, instead of telling him what a waste it is to spend all these years collecting something he can't (or doesn't want to) let go of

At the end of the day Mini prices are governed by market forces and what someone is prepared to pay.
Prices will continue to rise now production has long since ended and even later models become rarer with every passing year.....in another 10 years or so there will be even less cheap runners available as first time cars only major restoration projects.......for most people there are modern small cars available that are far cheaper to buy secondhand, that need little or no work and have no serious rust problems.
If someone wants to hoard Mini's and let them rot that is their right if the own them......it has always happened in the world of classic cars and alway will.......even if we don't understand why some people do this.

I saw that fella at L2B and he was selling windscreens for £70+ that you can get from minispares for 40.00 :/ I think he also wanted £70 for a battered black grille. I know the minis are his property and he's free to do what he likes but if this is a business set up I fail to see how he is making any money? Any mini savvy person would know they are being ripped off at those prices!
