Hi, I'm a new driver and don't know much about minis, or cars in general.

I seem to have a problem when going up even a slight hill, the car slows right down and shakes violently. Just wondered if anyone could tell me what the problem could be?

My dad has had a look and listened to the engine and says it could be due to knocking the exhaust and its sucking an unequal amount of air into the engine?

The exhaust is also shooting out large amounts of soot, could it just need an engine tune up?

Cheers for any help

What you describe could be a misfire under load, if you have not done a basic engine tune then this is where I'd start, Tappets/Points/Plugs/Timing and check Air Filter and adjust the Carburetor. When you have it stripped check the Distributor Cap and Rotor Arm, Check the leads for obvious signs of breakage and the Coil Terminals are tight and clean.

I used to have a terrible misfire under load and ended up swapping out the HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and plugs and that fixed it. In my case it was a couple of damaged HT leads that were shorting on the bonnet :)
