Just fitted a rebuilt engine to my Mk 1 , and i'm experiencing gear selection problems that look clutch related.

Just about everything is new, master and slave cyl, fluid, flywheel, backplate, bearing, plate and diaphragm.

I've adjusted it and bled it several times and there is very little play in any of the pins or joints yet i'm only getting just over 9mm of horizontal movement out of the slave cylinder ( which i'm sure isn't enough)

In the car the clutch pedal sits (4" off the floor) around an inch or so lower than the brake pedal and therefore has around two and a half inch of travel, is this enough ?

With the two large nuts correctly adjusted I have a 60 thou gap between the last nut and the casing.

I may have had this problem prior to fitting some of these new parts but the previous engine was so nick nacked i would not have noticed.

sorry for the long winded description but i thought it's best to give all the info in the hope that someone can shed some light on it, PLEASE

On a Mk.1, the top of the clutch arm MUST have a linear movement of 0.5" minimum, ideally a bit more and 0.55" is considered the correct figure.

Undo the overthrow nut and its locknut and back them well away from the housing.

Adjust the stop bolt to arm clearance to 0.020" and accurately measure the linear movement at the top of the arm.

If it is less than 0.5" there is a hydraulic problem, or clevis pin wear of a high order (unlikely).

This topic comes up so regularly that we should make it a 'sticky'.

Thanks for your swift reply, I had more or less convinced myself that this was the route of the problem prior to asking the question (having read other posts).

I have previously carried out all the steps you have suggested.

As I have already renewed the master with a metal can type lockheed new replacement, and replaced the slave with a new non origonal  including hose i'm now unsure where to look next for a hydraulic problem and was wondering if the pedal travel as described was a contributing factor.

Thanks again for your assistance any any further guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,

Ive just checked the clutch pedal on my Mk1 and it is also about 4" off the floor and almost 1" lower than the brake pedal.

If you've replaced both slave and master cylinders and flexi hose, is it possible that youve maybe got a defective seal in one of the new components?

I had clutch problems of a similar nature last year where the old original slave wasnt pushing out far enough. I replaced all of the above, just like you, which cured my problem.

Can you disconnect push rod from the clutch arm to see how much it's moving out while not connected to the clutch to rule out any mechanical issues with the clutch itself?
