Fitted a 286, going from a 266. No harder to drive at all, I wouldn't be scared of trying it for yourself.

It is, indeed, no 'harder' to drive with a 286 once you get used to the fact that if the cam is being used as designed your revs will almost never drop below around 5000 and will be over 6000 for a lot of the time.

If you are not intending to drive like that, then a 286 is the wrong cam. If you are intending to wring the power out of it by driving like that, then it is an ideal cam. My rally 'S' really does fly on a tarmac section of a rally with the 286, although on gravel it's a bit too 'top end' if I am being honest.

As above, the problem with a 286 is the cost of the engine build and the high wear rate due to the high revs.
