Am aware that this may sound like a bit of an idiot question... if so then I'll get my coat, but here goes...

OK so new tires have been fitted at garage, only they have attached some fat ugly wheel balances to the outside of my pepperpots :shy: . I was therefore wondering:

Do these balances have to be on the outside?

Do you reckon they'll charge me much if I want to move them and if it's feasible?

Cheers, Alex

You can't move them without rebalancing them, you get sticky ones to go behind the spokes close to the outside of the wheel but you'd have to get them rebalanced

They look terrible so I always have my wheels balanced on the inside. Somewhere like kwik fit or the usual places like that don't seem to have very experienced tyre fitters and don't tend to know a great deal about it in my experience.

Go to a small independent tyre place with someone with experience and knowledge and they will be able to balance them on the inside

Most up to date workshops now have wheel balancers which can balance wheel with out weights on the outside

Drives me mad when they put the clip-on weights on alloys .. it damages the lacquer and in a few years you start to get corrosion underneath ...

I always specify stick-ons now .. they don't always like it as it's more work to clean up the wheel to make them stick .. but as I'm paying ... ;D

Alex,

With stick-on weights inside the wheel rim check carefully that they are not fouling the brake calipers.

This is unlikely to be a problem with 12 or 13 inch wheels, but I have has this issue when using stick-on weights on 10 inch alloys -  they catch on the 7.5 calipers.

^^ Right thanks everyone, sounds like it's going back in. Found some pretty noticeable and irritating wheel wobble above 50 this evening too, so they'll be starting again with the balancing anyway... smh!  O_O

Oh, and edit they're 12" "Rover Special Alloys" (Pepperpots to you and me!)

Only need weights on the front? Front wheels only? Why?

The rear doesnt give shake etc through the steering.

I work on transit vans, one van had a severe wheel wobble.. We balanced the front wheels and one required 190g of weight.(we didnt put any weight on it) we swapped the front wheels to the rear (which didnt require added weights) and the wheel wobble was gone!

But having unbalanced wheels on the rear will cause the back end to wobble still

And the bearings to say there goodbuys, who had the thought that back wheels don't need balancing just because you probably wouldn't be able to feel it was good, thats like having a hole in your fuel tank - yeah but you don't notice it driving along!

Yes, all four wheels need to be balanced.
