Where do you suppose the vibration you can feel through the steering goes if you move the wheels to the back?

My dad had loads of problems with vibration on the back of his focus. At more than 50 mph it was really apparent. He had his wheels checked twice and they were balanced (they had stick on weights inside of them). It turned out in the end that it was a faulty brake disc that was out of balance.
The out of balance disc caused the wheel bearing on that side to fail, the bushes went on that side first a couple of years before the other and it was very noticeable. You didn't feel it through the steering wheel but you could feel it through the rest of the car. The parcel shelf and rear seats rattled too.
All 4 wheels need to be balanced.

My work... Yes i work part time... We always check rear wheels with the balance equipment but we have never had to apply balance weights(even on a severely damaged wheel)

Causes no wear!!
apart from uneven tyre wear, bearings, suspension etc.
I was also on the belief (having worked fitting tyres on and off for the past 10 or so years) that it was actually illegal to supply and fit tyres without them being balanced regardless of where they are fitted to the vehicle.
The only thing not balancing the rears does is save time for the lazy bodge it garages.

balance is needed in all four wheels. its obvious. car manufacturers wouldnt balance all 4 wheels them unless it was necessary - believe me any cost saving even miniscule cost of balance weights would be cut if not needed - work in car supply chain to major manufactors so know what its like, plus worked as a tyre fitter.
as to where weights applied. knock on weights on the wheel rim give the best results. but dont look nice to the eye.
lots of weight generally mean either deformed rim or cheap tyres.
weights can be fitted behind the spokes ie stick ons but are a pain on old rims due to corrosion and dirt preventing good adhesion. hence where most places use knock on alloy weights. not lack of expericance. more cost verus time .
but even using stick on weights behind the spokes / wheel face is a comprimise to the best dynamic balance.

In addition to this, is it normal to be charged a higher-than usual price for dealer supplied tires? The new ones are 50% over the odds found on Minispares, plus fitting plus balancing as extra costs...
