As this crops up so much here is the excellent picture showing the firing order and the direction of rotation of the distributor and the lead location.
When correctly timed on No 1 cylinder TDC (both valves closed) on the firing stroke the rotor arm will be pointing at the no 1 lead position on the distributor cap
