Knuckle Joints Vs Ball Joints

suspension

Best Answer sherly , 30 May 2014 - 01:35 PM

The component in the first link is a knuckle joint - goes between the upper suspension arm and the suspension trumpet.

The second link is the swivel hub balljoint, 2 fitted per side at the front these are fitted to the top and bottom of the hubs - I suspect it is these that need replacing, based on your description "upper and lower balljoints need replacing".

Pics would help wouldn't they!

Question relates to a '96 Rover Mini 1.3L SPi

Hi folks, question for all of you. When I had the mini inspected, I was told that both my upper and lower balljoints need replacing. I didn't think there was a difference, so I did some quick research and ordered 2 of these knuckle joints:

I've had them sitting around, not thinking about it, but I'm going to take them into the mechanic that did the inspection, and while under the car the other day, noticed that there actually is a lower balljoint. Now my questions is, what's the difference between that knuckle joint, and these balljoints:

Based on the Haynes manual, it almost feels like the knuckle joint *is* the upper ball joint, but I can't really tell that easily. Could someone please explain the difference to me? I can't seem to find anything in the Haynes manual, or using my Google-fu.

the first one is for your suspension trumpet/hi lo to go on (a knuckle).  The second is a ball joint for the top and bottom of the wheels hub.

Hi,

The knuckle joints fit into the suspension cones in the front subframe tower and sit in the top of the top arm. On the top arm forward of the knuckle joint you will see a nut on the top of the top arm this holds the threaded portion of the ball joint in place, the ball joint itself being attached to the wheel hub, and there is then the bottom ball joint that you have seen. From what you say you need to purchase two sets of ball joints one pair for each front hub. I would advise you to buy the genuine ones from mini spares or mini spares own, as you get get them from lots of places but the quality may not be as good.
