Does anyone know if the early mgf idle control valve fits the mpi. Only they seem vastly cheaper than the mini ones

AFAIK this part was common to a lot of Rover group cars. Older part number MLZ100050 or MLZ100090 (replacement) I think from memory the older ones came apart as you could buy the electrical part separately and the later ones didn't.
