Hi all

My twin hs2 set will be bought this week I think ( I heard lots of good things about more torque on the lower rev range etc)

And now I am wondering what filter I should use.

The standard filters were just airboxes with normal filter elements in it, and that gave around 55 BHP on a 998.

Minisport sells their kits with pancake filters that are supposed to be better than standard filters. Can I order chrome pancake filters without restricting bhp too much?

It has twin pipercross foam filters fitted atm but they became hard ( says the seller) so I dont think they are usable?

grtz!

How about using an ITG set up? They use a baseplate which bolts to the front of your carbs then the filter clips on to the baseplate. Give Merlin Motorsport a shout, they do them. You can even use ram pipes with them! Ignore anyone who says 'yeah but they catch fire' thats because your carbs are not set up correctly. Make sure you oil the filter too! They are really good quality filters and they will out preform cotton gauze filters all day long ;)

Pancake filters are crap (or so I'm told). Unless you have some kind of radius into the carb mouth you won't see any performance increase. The standard airbox will be better and looks cooler anyway if you can afford one.

There aren't alot of them around atm :P Found someone who offered a round filter, don't know if it fits for a mini or not... ( picture of it ) 10174797_10203198856403816_7285859573749

Im not searching a performance increase, but atm I have a single hs4 cone, but wondering if I would lose power with twin hs2 pancake filters.. Or if I should try and clean the pipercross cone filters that will come with the filter...

They are crap without a radius plate - I've spent quite a time messing around with factory air transport systems and can confirm that you'll lose a substantial (not just 5%) amount of airflow allowing air to enter a system over a sharp edge - you want ideally a 1/4r radius.

For what it's worth, ram pipes also need an inlet radius, and believe nothing of the rubbish about accelerating airflows, it just ain't the case apart from the obvious change in velocity caused by CSA change.

As for 55 BHP out of a 998 mini.....hmmmmmm :-)

Captain mainwaring would you like to explain your uncertainty from getting 55 from a 998, I was getting 56 before putting an ACDodd RS cam in

Whilst the foam socks are an easy and cheap way out, i would really recommend against fitting them. They have the tendancy to suck themselves in. They do not have any supporting cage and i have seen them get sucked in on wide open throttle. They are a last ditch effort if you really cannot use anything else.

I see your point but he says airboxes, so I think he means the cooper with the big twin airbox thing

Not that it matters but it's a rover mini 998cc - did they ever get 55BHP out of a carbed one?

I was going to use K&N pancake filters with MED stub stacks, but that would cost me £210 all in, which is too expensive, although probably the most efficient option.

Instead, I'm using ram pipes and RamAir sock filters, will cost £40 altogether, much more reasonable. While I'm sure the cheaper sock filters probably would get sucked in, these look quite substantial. Below are links to the products I'm using, there's a picture of them in the twin HS2s picture thread.

Ram pipes: http://www.europaspa...-ram-pipes.html
