Heater Valve Leaking...

Best Answer PaulColeman , 15 June 2014 - 10:37 AM

I've fixed this by doing as somebody suggested and sanded the surface of the valve to get it flat (it was nowhere near to start with). I then made a new gasket out of 0.8mm gasket paper and it's sealed like a good'un.

Thanks people :)

I fitted a new heater valve to my Daughter's 1976 Mini 1000 and got the gasket from Mini Spares... it leaked. I tightened it up but couldn't stop it leaking. It wasn't gushing out but there would be a little puddle under the car when I took it out of the garage.

So I tried sealing it with instant gasket instead of the original gasket and after a while it started leaking.

I'm not sure what else to do with it to be honest has anybody else had a similar problem?

Thanks, Paul.

if its the heater valves that i have had to buy 4 times in a year then they have had a dodgy batch of them. i got a straight cuplin one and pushed the pipe onto it so now i dont need the heat valve the water just runs around constant.

Its probably not leaking from the gasket.  The latest of these valves have a weakness in that the end cap isn't crimped on tight enough at manufacture and the caps have been blowing in use.  I would contact Mini Spares first off and see what they say.

Yea common problem. I went though 2 then just went out and bought an alloy one from DSN classics. That thing is never gonna leak haha.

Okay, thanks for the replies. I'll look at it more closely (i.e. I'll take my glasses next time!) and see if I can determine if it's the valve itself.

Cheers, Paul.

If it's leaking from the gasket (and it should be very easy to see) - take the thing off and put a bit of 120 grit emery on a glass plate and lap the mating face until it's flat. When you tighten it up, there is no need to rook the arse out of the bolts, all you will do is bend the flange and make the leak worse.

It looks like it's leaking out of the top of the stud?

I will try to flatten the mating face and see if that helps.

Cheers, Paul.

That's not actually a valve/tap though, it's just a take off, and therefore you can't shut off the coolant flow to the matrix with it. You could however fit one of those plus an inline type valve (as fitted to later models) if you don't want the heater on all year round.

This is true but I know myself and most other mini owners I know keep there open all the time anyway. Take a bit of heat away from the engine and you just have the heater in the car switched off if you don't want heat. to be honest there is really not a lot of need for a value one. Non of my minis have one.

Yea what he said haha. I have a black one on my clubby and a silver one ready for the red mini. Other great thing they make are alloy engine steady plates (Thats sit under the master cylinder) both my minis had washers bodged on the as the holes rotted out. Replace it with one of there and you will never have a problem.

A mere £21 for no more coolant leaks? It's a simple end to a leaky problem for me.

Exactly! I think the top taps I bought the first time were around a tenner each and they were crap and went straight in the bin after only a week weeks, if I had bought one of them first time I would really of saved myself £20. They may be more expensive then the standard one but the point is you will over ever need to buy one so its not really that expensive when you look at it that way.
